MICRO MILLING™ – how does film milling give furniture a unique appearance?

MICRO MILLING™ technology is one of the latest solutions in the field of furniture front finishing. Based on milling film with micrometric precision, it allows for the creation of new decorative effects that were previously impossible with traditional MDF milling.

What is MICRO MILLING™?

MICRO MILLING™ is a technology developed by Melaco that allows for micro-milling of foil-covered furniture fronts. Unlike traditional milling in MDF boards, micro milling does not interfere with the structure of the board itself, but with the foil layer, which is usually 200 to 300 micrometres thick.

The process involves the extremely precise removal of the top layer of foil using computer-controlled milling cutters. Thanks to the use of specialised software, it is possible to create a variety of patterns while maintaining full control over every detail.

Why does milled film look different from smooth film?

The difference between a front with smooth film and one that has undergone micro milling is clear. This is evident both visually and to the touch. Smooth foil has a uniform surface that reflects light in a predictable manner. On the other hand, milled foil has a microtexture that causes light to refract and scatter.

This effect makes the surface dynamic. The patterns are visible at a certain angle, while in other conditions they almost blend in with the whole. This gives the furniture a subtle but clearly perceptible decorative value that distinguishes it from standard solutions. This is particularly important in modern and minimalist designs, where details play a key role.

What patterns can be achieved with MICRO MILLING™?

One of the greatest advantages of micro milling is the variety of visual effects available. This technology allows for the creation of both simple and elegant lines as well as more complex ornaments. The patterns can be geometric – for example, parallel lines, rhombuses or waves – or organic, inspired by natural wood surfaces.

It is also possible to create frames and borders that give fronts a more classic look. Importantly, all these patterns are fully repeatable and can be used in mass production. This allows furniture manufacturers to introduce decorative elements into their collections that were previously difficult to achieve while maintaining high quality and repeatability.

Is milled film durable?

Durability is one of the most common topics discussed in the context of micro milling. In this case, the key factor is that milling only affects the top layer of the film. Since the cuts are very shallow, they do not adversely affect the strength of the entire board.

The films used in this technology, PCV and PET, are highly resistant to moisture, high temperatures and scratches. In addition, PUR adhesives are used in the production process to increase the strength of the joints and protect the surface from deformation. As a result, fronts with milled film are durable, easy to clean and retain their aesthetic properties for many years.

MICRO MILLING™ is an innovative furniture finishing method that combines aesthetics, durability and precision.

Thanks to micrometric film milling, furniture manufacturers can offer solutions that meet the needs of modern customers. This technology allows for the creation of unique designs that distinguish furniture from the competition, while ensuring full repeatability in mass production.

In this technology, chipboard can be used as a substrate, which makes the solution much more economical compared to MDF-based fronts. An additional advantage is low weight – the fronts are over 30% lighter, which translates into lower delivery costs, easier transport and the possibility of packaging in parcels in accordance with the requirements of courier companies.

This makes MICRO MILLING™ the perfect combination of innovation, functionality and affordability.
